In a personal quest to find a Black and White film that suits my needs and tastes, delivers the look I currently like, I have been working my way through the range of films ilford offer.
HP5+ is a very good all rounder giving a balance of tones, but my taste is for something with more contrast, so I have been testing XP2 and Delta.
This picture called “A slice of Soho” is one I took recently (Sept 2021) on my Canon AL1 using XP2.
This uses C41 processing, you develop it as you would your Colour films, and it gives very good results pushed / pulled and abused on the same roll. Very useful but…
My eye likes the Delta 100 and 400 , not tested 3200 yet but its on my to-do list, as for my it gives a cleaner more contrast feel to the shots. Example below taken using Delta 100, on the same day, same camera.
To me there is a definite clarity difference and cleanliness in the “Modes of transport” picture on ilford Delta that is not on the XP2.
Could this be the different development approach, maybe, but right now I feel the Delta range is going to give the Black and White look I am after, or that’s in my head, so I will be sticking with that for now.
